# Connect to Codex

> Add Outbox to OpenAI Codex. Sign in once in your browser, with no API keys

## Overview

Add Outbox to **Codex** and it can work in your Outbox account from any session: build and edit agents, run workflows, search conversations, send messages and calls, and pull reports.

You sign in on an Outbox page in your browser. Codex never sees your password. It gets a token that renews itself, and you can disconnect at any time.

One setup covers the Codex CLI, the Codex app in ChatGPT for desktop, and the Codex IDE extension. They share the same settings and sign-in.

<Tip>
  In the Outbox dashboard, **Settings → Claude & Codex** has this setup with
  copy buttons, and shows when you're connected.
</Tip>

<Note>
  You'll need your Outbox email and password. If you normally sign in with
  Google, use **Forgot password** on the Outbox sign-in page to set a password
  first.
</Note>

## Add it with the Codex CLI

<Steps>
  <Step title="Add the server">
    Run this in your terminal:

    ```bash theme={null}
    codex mcp add outbox --url https://api.getoutbox.ai/mcp
    ```
  </Step>

  <Step title="Sign in">
    ```bash theme={null}
    codex mcp login outbox
    ```

    Your browser opens an Outbox sign-in page. Enter your Outbox email and
    password and click **Sign in and connect**. Once the browser shows that
    sign-in is complete, go back to the terminal. You're connected.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Check it">
    Start Codex and run `/mcp`. **outbox** should be listed with its tools.
    Then just ask:

    > List my agents and tell me which ones had failed calls this week.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Note>
  Finish signing in within 5 minutes. After that Codex stops waiting, and you
  run `codex mcp login outbox` again.
</Note>

<Tip>
  On a server or over SSH, where no browser can open, run
  `codex mcp login outbox --no-browser`. Codex prints a link. Open it on any
  device and sign in.
</Tip>

## Add it in the Codex app or IDE extension

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open MCP settings">
    In the Codex app, open **Settings → MCP servers**. In the IDE extension,
    open the gear menu and choose **MCP servers**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add the server">
    Click **Add server** and fill in:

    | Field | Value |
    | - | - |
    | Name | `outbox` |
    | Type | **Streamable HTTP** |
    | URL | `https://api.getoutbox.ai/mcp` |

    Leave headers and tokens empty, then click **Save** and restart Codex when
    asked.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Sign in">
    Click **Authenticate** next to **outbox** and sign in on the page that
    opens. If you don't see the button, run `codex mcp login outbox` in a
    terminal. The sign-in is shared, so the app picks it up.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Or edit config.toml

The CLI, app and IDE extension all read `~/.codex/config.toml`. Adding the server there does the same thing as `codex mcp add`:

```toml theme={null}
[mcp_servers.outbox]
url = "https://api.getoutbox.ai/mcp"
```

Then run `codex mcp login outbox` to sign in. To give one project its own setup, put the same block in `.codex/config.toml` inside that project.

## What you can ask

> Create an outbound sales agent for Acme Roofing. Friendly, qualifies budget and timeline, books a 15-minute discovery call.

> Add every contact tagged "reactivation" that hasn't been called yet to the AI Reactivation Sequence workflow.

> Pull the last 30 calls for the Gamma Plumbing booking agent and tell me why it keeps losing on price.

> Text Jane Smith that her appointment moved to 3pm.

## Agency accounts

If you sign in with an agency account, Codex can reach every client under your agency. Tell it which one to work in:

> Switch me over to Delta Roofing.

Codex remembers the active client for your connection until you switch again. You can also name the client in a request: *"How many calls did Beta Dental take yesterday?"*

## Before anything risky

Deleting an agent, workflow or contacts, releasing a phone number, or starting a workflow for more than a handful of contacts doesn't happen straight away. Outbox sends back a summary of what will happen, and Codex asks you to confirm before it runs.

## Security

* **Your password stays with Outbox.** You type it on an Outbox page, never into Codex.
* **Codex holds a token, not your login.** It's kept in your system keychain, replaced every hour, and lasts up to 180 days before you'll be asked to sign in again.
* **Your access, nothing more.** Codex can do what your Outbox login can do, and no more.
* **Disconnect any time.** Run `codex mcp logout outbox`, or remove the server with `codex mcp remove outbox`. Changing your Outbox password also disconnects every connected app. You can also see and disconnect every connected app in the Outbox dashboard under **Settings → Claude & Codex**.
